Labour MEP calls for driving lessons as part of school curriculum
A Labour MEP has said young people should be learning about road safety while at school.
The call comes following the deaths of four young men on the country's roads over the bank holiday weekend.
Emer Costello said the current road safety strategy is not working as the number of people killed in crashes is up from 105 to 115 on the same period last year.
Ms Costello said young people should be learning about the rules of the road and driving at a young age to really realise the dangers:
"It's not only just a question of introducing road safety into the school curriculum I think it would actually be a good idea to introduce driving lessons into the school curriculum," she said.
"I think if young people learned to drive with a qualified instructor I think that would go a major way to improving safety on our roads."
