A man who drowned while swimming in a river in Northern Ireland where another man was rescued has been named.

James Kincaid, 34, from the Newtownstewart area of Co Tyrone, got into difficulty in the River Strule in his home town.

The accident happened at about 5.20pm on Saturday evening.

The second man was rescued and treated by ambulance staff.

Police said a post-mortem examination will be carried out following Mr Kincaid’s death.

He was the second person to drown in the last few days in Northern Ireland after 15-year-old Steven Mitchell from Doagh, Co Antrim, drowned in the River Roe in Co Londonderry on Thursday.

It is understood he went into the water to retrieve a ball.
