Members of the Coast Guard and the Garda Water Unit are leading the search this morning for the 60-year-old man, who went missing while swimming in the quarry near Carrick-on-Suir yesterday evening.
The alarm was raised around 6.30pm when he failed to return from swimming.
It follows a number of drownings across the country in recent days.
A total of nine people have been confirmed dead in drownings since the heatwave began.
Yesterday, a 24-year-old drowned after getting into difficulty at Ard-rah in Co Donegal - while a 32-year-old woman was taken to hospital in Kilkenny City after falling into the River Nore.
The Coast Guard said that the hot weather is luring swimmers into complacency - it is appealing for anyone venturing out on the water to only swim in water they are familiar with and to never drink alcohol before swimming.
