Age Action urges people to check on elderly neighbours during heatwave

People are being urged to check in on our elderly neighbours or relatives this weekend - as the heatwave continues.

Yesterday was the hottest day so far this year - with the mercury hitting 30.1 degrees in Fermanagh - and 29.6 in Roscommon.

Age Action said that heatwaves in other countries have resulted in increased deaths among older people.

In 2003 in France for example, 15,000 people died from weather related illnesses.

Spokesperson for Age Action Eamon Timmins said that we need to be extra careful.

"People here are not used to this kind of heat and we need to be aware that it is a danger," he said.
