Teenage girl charged over gang robbery that left man 'lying in traffic'

A 16-year-old girl has been charged over a gang robbery of a man who was allegedly pushed onto the ground and left lying in front of on-coming traffic in Dublin city centre.

The girl, who is in care, has been charged at the Dublin Children's Court with robbery at Burgh Quay, on the night of September 18 last.

Garda Jennifer Weldon told Judge Ann Ryan at the Dublin Children's Court that the teenager made “no reply” when she was charged with the offence.

It was alleged that three males and the girl were involved in the mugging in which the man was “pushed on the ground in front of on-coming traffic.” Another member of the group knocked the man onto the street, however, it was claimed that the girl then took his phone as he “was left on the ground”.

Gda Weldon said the man did not suffer any injuries but was shaken up after the alleged incident.

The girl, who was accompanied to her hearing by her father, her social worker and member of staff from her care accommodation, has not yet entered a plea to the charge.

Defence solicitor Caroline Egan needed time to prepare submissions pleading for the case to be kept in the juvenile court and not sent forward to the Circuit Court, which has tougher sentencing powers.

The teenage girl was remanded on bail to appear again in August when a decision on her trial venue is to be made.
