Gay rights groups welcome govt's receipt of convention report
Gay rights groups are welcoming the news that the Constitutional Convention has given the Government its report recommending the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
In April, 79% of delegates at the Convention voted to support changing the Constitution to allow same-sex couples to marry in Ireland.
They also voted in favour of providing legal protection for lesbian and gay families.
Brian Sheehan, of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network says the wheels are now in motion for a same-sex marriage referendum.
"The Government now has four months to respond and if they accept the report, will give a date or an indicated date for a referendum, if that's the next step" Mr Sheehan said.
"I think there has been extraordinary public support, both at the Convention when the issues were truly tested out… and in all the polls.
"There is very significant support all around Ireland for the next step."
