Ombudsman welcomes extension of mobility allowance

The Ombudsman has welcomed the coalition's decision to temporarily extend the Mobility Allowance.

The Government decided to scrap the scheme after Emily O'Reilly questioned the fairness of the allowance - which discriminated on the basis of age.

An inter-departmental group has now been asked to come up with proposals for the operation of a replacement scheme by October.

Mrs O'Reilly said she hoped a resolution would be found quickly.
