Geoghegan murder accused to try and delay trial

Hunger-strike prisoner John Dundon will today apply to the Supreme Court to delay his trial for the murder of Garryowen rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

The case against the 30-year-old of Hyde Road, Limerick is due to start at the non-jury Special Criminal Court tomorrow.

The High Court last week refused to push John Dundon’s murder trial back to next year.

Lawyers for Dundon want an adjournment because they claim they have not had enough time to prepare for the case.

They said since April they have received hours of CCTV footage and around 26,000 documents from gardaí, which they have not had a chance to go through.

Dundon’s trial was supposed to start last Tuesday when he appeared at the Special Criminal Court wearing nothing but a pair of shorts.

Unconventional dress aside, the non-jury court agreed to a request from his lawyers to put the trial off until tomorrow to see if the Supreme Court will entertain their bid to have the trial delayed.
