Penalty points report 'ignores' repeat offenders
Garda records of more than 100 cases are understood to show issues, including repeat offenders, were largely absent from the Garda report into allegations surrounding the termination of penalty points.
The records, seen by the Irish Examiner, show cases in which motorists, both civilians and gardaÃ, with multiple detections for penalty points offences had all of them terminated.
The report by Assistant Commissioner John O'Mahoney and senior gardaà concluded that allegations about repeat offenders were largely unfounded.
However, Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner, has said the gardaÃ's own records fly in the face of this conclusion.
He said: "One of the reasons senior gardaà can exercise discretion is the motorist's record and the likelihood of them offending again.
"Anybody that could see the number of repeat offenders would see that there is definitely a problem there and you would immediately have to ask why repeat offenders are getting their points terminated."
