Teaching unions reject deal over supervision and substitution conditions

Two teaching unions have rejected the Haddington Road Agreement.

The ASTI and the TUI said the new proposals to cut pay and change working conditions in the public service do not represent sufficient change from the original LRC proposals.

ASTI General Secretary, Pat King said a key reason behind the rejection is the inclusion of the abolition of payment for supervision and substitution work.

Yesterday afternoon, Ireland's largest union SIPTU, said it would recommend that its members accept the new proposals.

The head of the TUI said the union has no current plans to ballot their members on the agreement.

John McGabhann, General Secretary of the TUI, said their members have been balloted recently on the Croke Park 2 proposals, which they rejected.

He said the changes in the Haddington agreement are not sufficient enough to warrant a fresh ballot.
