Coombe ordered to pay €2.9m in damages to boy

A ten-year-old boy, who suffered catastrophic injuries in the minutes after his birth at the Coombe Hospital in Dublin, is to receive damages of more than €2.9m.

Eoin Dunne of Malahide, Co Dublin, has dyskinetic cerebral palsy, is wheelchair dependent and cannot communicate verbally.

If Eoin had been ventilated nine minutes, rather than 17 minutes, after his birth he may not have suffered catastrophic injury.

The ten year old has cerebral palsy, is in a wheelchair and needs constant care as well as a feeding tube. His father gave up his job as an accountant to be his main carer.

Earlier this year after a 43-day hearing, the High Court found the Coombe Hospital liable for Eoin's injuries.

Today the court approved a damages settlement of €2.9m, an interim settlement as Eoin's future care needs will be reassessed in two years' time.
