High Court to assess €2.5m Coombe Hospital damages claim

The High Court is to assess a claim of around €2.5m against the Coombe Hospital in Dublin which has been found liable for the catastrophic injuries suffered by a 10 year old boy in the minutes after his birth.

Eoin Dunne of Malahide, Co Dublin has dyskinetic cerebral palsy, is wheelchair dependant, and cannot communicate verbally.

If he had been ventilated nine minutes rather than 17 minutes after his birth he may not have suffered the catastrophic injuries that have shaped his life.

Eoin Dunne needs constant care aswell as a feeding tube.

His father, gave up his job as an accountant to be his main carer.

Earlier this year the High Court found the Coombe Hospital liable for Eoin's injuries.

Now Ms Justice Mary Irvine is being asked by the Dunne's lawyers to assess a claim for damages against the hospital for around €2.5m euros.

The court heard the sum would buy a new home suitable to Eoin's needs aswell as providing for his care for the next two years when his case would be reassessed.

The hospital is contesting the sum being sought. The case resumes tomorrow.
