SIPTU reps open talks to minimise job losses and resist closure of Diageo's Waterford brewery

SIPTU representatives have begun negotiations with management at Diageo Ltd aimed at minimising job losses.

The move follows an announcement today that the company intends to cease operations at its brewery in Waterford with the loss of 36 jobs, and move operations to its St James Gate facility.

Diageo said the move was necessary "to ensure the long-term sustainability and global competitiveness of its brewing operations in Ireland".

SIPTU Organiser Terry Bryan said today's announcement was "horrendous news" for the workers and their families. He said the union would resist the brewery's closure.

"Despite the fact that the company had indicated to us that operations were under review, the fact of a closure date in December 2013 has come as a huge shock, and is certainly something we will be resisting," he said.
