Protest group: Behind the banks there are many broken people

A group of protesters fighting for bank debt write-downs have brought their campaign to the European Parliament in Brussels.

The Cork-based 'Ballyhea says no to bank debt' campaigners will meet a number of MEPs today.

One of the campaigners who travelled to Brussels is Fiona Fitzpatrick, a mother of three from Charleville, and she said Ireland should not be paying the massive bank debts we have been lumbered with.

She said: "I see terrible inequality in our society at the moment, it doesn't sit well with me that we are carrying a private bank debt and because of that there are so many people suffering in Ireland.

"Behind the banks, the billions, the bondholders there are many real people in Ireland who are broken, many are in danger of breaking.

"We do really need to stand up and make sure that there is some change and that there is some fairness and equality in the country."
