Weather hits Daffodil Day as Cancer Society fundraiser down 50%

The Irish Cancer Society is appealing for online donations after yesterday's fundraising drive was a wash-out.

Many of the Daffodil Day volunteers were forced indoors after city streets were left empty due to torrential rain.

Organisers are asking people to dig deep and make a contribution online at cancer.ie.

Head of fundraising for the Irish Cancer Society Mark Mellett said the amount raised so far is well behind last year's figures.

"At this stage, we think we could be down as much as 50%, so the weather has had a big impact," he said.

He paid tribute to the many "fantastic" volunteers who took to the streets to raise some money.

"They were determined to make the most of what was a very bad day, but the initial figures are disappointing."
