Gardaí have not ruled out foul play in the deaths of a father and his three-year-old daughter in west Cork. However, it is understood they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the tragedy.

Post mortems are being carried out on the bodies of the man, who was in his early 50s, and his daughter today, after they were found in an isolated cove west of Ballydehob overnight.

A search had been launched after the girl's mother reported them missing from their home on a farm at Foilnamuck in Ballydehob around midnight.

A major search operation began. Officers carried out a search of the farmland and surrounding area and Valentia coastguard was called in to coordinate the search, which also involved the Baltimore Lifeboat service.

The girl's body was found on a nearby beach at Audley Cove at around 2am, while her father's body was found in shallow water nearby.

Detectives are trying to establish how they died.

Local Labour TD Michael McCarthy said the community was numb after this "devastating tragedy".
