A father drowned his 3-year-old daughter before killing himself in an apparent murder-suicide as his marriage broke down, detectives believe.

This beautiful part of West Cork can rarely have looked as desolate as it did yesterday — a grey and cold sky draped over the scene of an almost unimaginable tragedy.

The father and daughter recovered from the sea near Ballydehob in the early hours of this morning have been named locally.
