The father of an Irish man attacked in Australia has said his son is recovering from his injuries.

25-year-old Kieran Cahill from Killarney, Co. Kerry, was allegedly attacked by three men outside a kebab shop in Sydney in the early hours of Monday morning after he asked a number of men to stop hassling a couple of women.

The Irish Echo newspaper in Australia said one man has been charged with the assault, but that police are looking for others in connection with the incident.

Kieran's father, Michael, said he has been in contact with his son via text message.

He said: "I just received a text message from his a while agao and all he wanted to say was that he was sorry he was not able to contact us.

"He has been going ofr operations, so that he couldn't contact us. He has had surgery on his throat, he has got a tube inserted into his throat, his throat got stood on.

"He has had surgery on his jaw, that was shattered in a couple of places."
