Cork family angered at HSE treatment

A family from Cork has been expressing their anger about confusing communication from the HSE.

27-year-old Gráinne O'Connor suffers from an extreme form of epilepsy, for which she has been advised to seek treatment abroad.

She, and her family, have been struggling to get funding from the HSE for a programme in London, which they were told did not fall within the Treatment Abroad Scheme.

After appealing that decision, the O'Connors received a letter from the HSE, rejecting their appeal, but added that they would make an exception by funding her treatment as a "once-off".

Gráinne's Dad, Tom O'Connor, has said the letter was not very gracious.

He said: "It was insulting, the whole idea was to deflate you totally and then tell you what a great organisation the HSE is, because they are magnaminously going to provide what they don't have to provide.

"And also, I might point out, what they are providing is the treatment abroad."
