Five years jail for Limerick driver after fatal collision with married couple's car

A 29-year old man has been jailed for five years and banned from driving for 30 years for dangerous driving causing the deaths of a married couple in 2009.

Michael Harty of St Mary's Terrace, Askeaton, Co Limerick, was convicted last Friday and sentenced this afternoon at Limerick Circuit Court.

Harty had strayed onto the wrong side of the road while taking a series of bends, before colliding with Maurice and Margaret Hartnett's car.

The court heard that Harty had been drinking, and was over the blood alcohol limit at the time of the fatal crash.
