IMC: Protection of public 'paramount' in abortion legislation

Politicians have been told to ensure the protection of the public is paramount when drafting abortion legislation and regulations.

The Irish Medical Council is before a three-day hearing of the Oireachtas Health Committee that will also here from legal professionals, churches and advocacy groups.

It said its current guidelines are not a legal code and that legislation is necessary.

However, the council does not want special procedures for emergencies, saying the same principles should apply to all situations.

President of the IMC Kieran Murphy has said the politicians need to ensure they get the legislation right.
