AIB 'considering mortgage write-offs'

AIB has said it is considering offering mortgage write-offs for some of its customers who are in severe difficulties with making their repayments.

Head of the bank's arrears unit Garry Stran said AIB would offer mortgage restructuring to customers who "work with them" and who find themselves in such circumstances.

The model of mortgage restructuring under consideration includes the possibility of a portion of debt forgiveness.

It is estimated about 30% of AIB's mortgage customers may be in the bracket of customers in severe difficulty.
