People will boycott any property tax, says Coppinger

Campaigners have warned today that if a property tax is introduced in today's Budget, it will be boycotted in the same way that hundreds of thousands of people boycotted the Household Charge.

The Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes are holding a protest outside the Dáil this evening to coincide with the publication of the Budget.

Spokesperson Ruth Coppinger said that people simply cannot afford to pay this tax.

"It's not doing any favours to the economy," she said.

"It's taking essential income out of people's pockets that could be creating demand and thousands of jobs.

"We have to send a message to the Government that we will boycott this tax in the same way that we did with the Household Tax."
