Chambers Ireland urge government not to tax employment

Don't tax employment on budget day.

That is the call from Chambers Ireland - which is urging the Finance Minister not to increase employer's PRSI, or to transfer the cost of paying workers' sick pay onto employers.

The group says the budget must create an environment that is conducive to getting people back to work - increasing the tax take and cutting the social welfare bill.

But the group's Deputy Chief Executive Sean Murphy says people need to be reassured that they won't lose benefits when they get a job.

"You won't necessarily lose all your benefits if you take a short-term job such as over the Christmas season or in the summer.

"It is worth your while to work and our whole point is to make employment worthwhile we need to make sure the incentives are right for people to take the job instead of fearing they will lose benefits or payments they might be getting on the dole."
