Limerick campaigners to protest against austerity and property tax

A protest against austerity and the property tax march will take place in Limerick this lunchtime.

It comes just a week after over 10,000 people took to the streets of Dublin in a similar rally.

It is understood that the Cabinet is considering introducing a property tax in next week's Budget which will be based on 0.2% of the value of the property.

Cian Prendiville from the Campaign Against Property Taxes and Austerity said that this levy will be resisted strongly.

"The super-rich have many forms of property," he said.

"They have yachts, they have mansions, they have shares, this isn't going after that. This tax is going after the homes of ordinary people, and what it's going to be going to be funding is the banks, the speculators, et cetera, et cetera.

"We don't have European-grade services, yet we have very high taxes already. Things like VAT and PAYE.

"What we would say is tax the rich, introduce a wealth tax on the super-rich and that would actually go after all of their property."
