Man jailed for gun offence at Smithfield horse fair

A 43-year-old man has been jailed for 16 months today for hiding a gun after it was discharged during a violent brawl at Smithfield horse fair in Dublin last year.

John Keniry, with an address at Rainsford Avenue, in Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of a pistol at Oliver Bond Street on March 6, 2011.

He hid the gun under leaves beside a blue gate at wastelands by the flats but a resident grew suspicious and contacted gardaí.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard he was told to conceal the weapon by a man he owed money to, felt he had no choice and did not know at the time that it had been fired.
