UK police question man as fears grow for missing Irish woman

Police in Wales are continuing to be question a man today in connection with the murder of a 37-year-old Irish woman.

Catherine Gowing, who is originally from Co Offaly, has not been seen since she left work last Friday.

North Wales Police appealed for the public's help as they said they are becoming increasingly concerned for Ms Gowing's welfare and have no knowledge as to her current whereabouts.

A 46-year-old Gwynedd man, who frequents the New Brighton area and is known to Ms Gowing, was arrested on suspicion of her murder on Tuesday night and is being questioned at a local police station.

A police spokesman said: "The information which led us to arrest him forms part of our investigative strategy and it would be inappropriate for me to elaborate further at this time."

He went on: "Catherine failed to meet a weekend appointment and did not turn up for work on Monday morning.

"This is totally out of character for Catherine, who maintains regular contact with her family, friends and work colleagues."

Ms Gowing was last seen leaving work at Evans Veterinary Practice in Clayton Road, Mold, at around 7pm on Friday.

She has not been seen since, but police believe that after finishing work she drove home to Cae Isa, New Brighton, in her work car, a Vauxhall Corsa.

Police said Ms Gowing owns a plum/burgundy-coloured Renault Clio bearing Irish registration plates - 00D 99970 - and this is also missing from her home address.

The spokesman added: "We urgently need to trace this vehicle as we strongly believe this will help us find Catherine.

"I want the public to think hard about this car and registration number."
