Gardaí are investigating a series of alleged sexual assaults in Listowel, Co Kerry.

The first incident is alleged to have taken place in Carroll's Yard between Friday night and Saturday morning, while the second alleged incident took place between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The alleged victims, understood to be two young girls, were taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in Cork.

Carroll's Yard, which is in the centre of Listowel, was cordoned off for a time yesterday as gardaí examined the area.

Superintendent Michael Fitzpatrick said that gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry in each case, and are preparing files for the DPP.

The weekend's incidents bring to three the number of sexual assaults alleged to have taken place in the north Kerry town within the past two weeks.

Listowel Gardaí are also investigating the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl in the town on the night of September 14.

Similarly to last weekend's incidents, garda say that they are following a definite line of enquiry and preparing a file for the DPP.
