Ruhama demands 'greater than ever'

Ruhama, the group responsible for helping women who are involved in the sex trade, say demands on its service is greater than ever.

It helped over 200 women in 2011 despite a challenging year in funding.

Almost half of those were victims of sex trafficking.

Spokesperson Sarah Benson says the women are being trafficked from over 36 different countries and are suffering in so many ways.

"Violence, sexual assault and coercive control, the organised nature of prostitution would mean that women are literally controlled by gangs.

"Equally, the actual experience of being in prostitution is something that takes a very significant toll in terms of emotional well being and physical well being."
