Gardaí begin speeding operation

Motorists are being urged to reduce their speed today as part of "Operation Slow Down".

The Garda and Road Safety Authority initiative is to raise awareness of the dangers of inappropriate and excessive speeding.

The 24-hour nationwide campaign, which began at 7am this morning, involves high visibility enforcement activity.

Up to 96 people have been killed in accidents since the start of the year - an increase of four on the same period last year.
