Martin: Low turnout reflects voter confusion on issue
The Fianna Fáil leader Michéal Martin has said there are "lessons to be learnt" from this vote on how to hold referendums.
Mr Martin has also expressed disappointment at yesterday's low turnout.
Fianna Fáil campaigned alongside the Government for a 'yes' vote, but the party leader has said he feels the referendum itself was "rushed, to some degree".
Mr Martin says there are a number of reasons behind the turnout figure.
He said: "I think it's a reflection, generally speaking, in terms of engagement and so on. I think it also reflects the degree to which people were not fully clear on the issues, but that said I am happy with the overall result and I think there are lessons to be learned on how one holds referendums.
"Information is key and we must always ensure that the most comprehensive information is provided."
