Daniel O'Connell commemoration today
The annual commemoration of Daniel O'Connell takes place today in Dublin.
Often referred to as "The Liberator", O'Connell was an Irish political leader in the first half of the 19th century and a former Lord Mayor of Dublin.
The Kerrryman campaigned for the right for Catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament, as well as for repeal of the Act of Union which combined Great Britain and Ireland.
Today's event in Glasnevin marks the 165th anniversary of O'Connell's death in Genoa in May 1847.
