Dublin City Council remove bins over illegal dumping

Around 200 public bins have been removed in Dublin because they were being used for illegal dumping.

Dublin City Council has said most of the bins were underused, but a quarter were being used for household waste.

It has been reported that almost 200 out of some 5,000 public bins have been removed from the streets of Dublin since January of last year.

The City Council took the decision, following a review of the situation for budgetary reasons.

Most of the bins were not being used, but around 50 were being used to dump household waste by people trying to avoid paying waste charges.

Efforts were made to minimise the dumping by reducing the size of the opening of the bins but bags were being forced in or left beside the bin instead.

The abuse was worst in the Dublin north central area where 18 bins were taken away.
