No RTE resignations after meeting with Rabbitte

The Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has said he is satisfied that the board of RTE fully appreciates the seriousness of the libeling of Fr Kevin Reynolds.

Speaking after a two-hour meeting with the RTE board, Minister Rabbitte said no member of the board offered their resignation over the affair, nor were resignations sought by him.

He said the board has agreed to make a submission to the Government within a week setting out what actions they propose to take to ensure there is no repeat of the affair in the future.

He also said there may have to be changes to the law to ensure greater compliance with broadcasting rules.

However, Minister Rabbitte said he believes the board of RTE is acting appropriately.

Mr Rabbitte said: "I am satisfied that the board understands fully and comprehensively the gravity of what has happened and I am satisfied that the board is determined that the expert recommendations that were set out both by Professor Hogan and the BAI will be implemented.

"For my part I am determined to ensure that that happens."

The RTE chairman Tom Savage said the issue of board resignations was never an issue during the meeting.
