Station closures will impact communities, warns Garda Commissioner

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has today admitted that the closure of Garda stations will impact on communities.

However, Commissioner Callinan said that he and his colleagues are working to minimise the impact of station closures.

At a briefing on community policing in Dublin today, the Commissioner says that an Garda Síochána will continue to need the support of locals to keep communities safe.

But Commissioner Callinan said that some communities will feel the absence of a Garda station.

"Station closures generally will have some impact in that context," he said.

"But my management team are working very, very hard in making sure that we don't leave anybody behind in this process; and that whatever services were available before those stations in those areas … where those stations are being closed that we will ensure that the same service is available."
