New Garda strategy to clamp down on burglaries
A major new Garda strategy to clamp down on burglaries is being launched.
Figures show that there has been an 8% increase nationally in the number of cases over the last year - despite a decrease in most other crime categories.
There has been a 40% jump in burglaries alone in Co Meath - with a 32% rise in Laois-Offaly.
The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan says Operation Fiacla is now being rolled-out nationwide to reduce the number of incidents:
"…We have launched an Operation, Operation Fiacla, which will deal with a lot of the issues particularly travelling criminals, criminals who are transgressing Garda district and boundaries and we are putting an effective strategy in place to deal with those"
