A number of homes in Dublin were evacuated overnight after the discovery of a viable explosive device.

The alarm was raised at about 2.30am this morning after it was found beside a car outside a house on the Galtymore Road.

The Army Bomb Disposal Unit was called out to make it safe, and locals were allowed to return home at around 4am.

Investigations are continuing.

Later it was revealed that the team was dispatched to Bernard Curtis House on Bluebell Road in Dublin 12, where they made safe a viable device without the need for a controlled explosion.

That scene was declared safe at 5.20am.
