O'Callaghan granted planning permission for €50m concert venue

Planning permission has been granted to Cork property developer Owen O’Callaghan for a major 6,000 capacity concert venue to be located on the city's quays.

However, Mr O’Callaghan said this morning that he would not proceed with the development if construction went ahead on a rival concert venue.

His €50m concert, conference and events centre would be constructed on Cork's Albert Quay, considered a prime site in the city given its location between the city centre and the docklands.

However permission has already been granted to Heineken Ireland and BAM contractors for the redevelopment of the former Beamish & Crawford brewery site on the city's South Main St, a plan which would include a similar-sized venue.

Today, a spokesperson for O’Callaghan Properties said they were delighted with the planning permission.

However they said: “There is only room for one such centre in Cork and if the South Main St project proceeds, then clearly we would not.”

There was no indication what would be developed on the Albert Quay site if the event centre doesn’t go ahead.
