Honohan to appear before Oireachtas committee

Central Bank Governor Patrick Honohan is due to appear before the all-party Oireachtas Finance Committee today.

Mr Honohan will be answering questions from TDs and senators on the efforts to secure a deal on Ireland's banking debt.

He was expected to ask the ECB last week for permission to delay payment of the next instalment on the Anglo promissory note, due next weekend.

Sinn Féin's finance spokesman Pearse Doherty, a member of the Oireachtas finance committee, said part of the meeting will be conducted in private.

"The meeting will be split up into two sections," he explained.

"There was supposed to be a completely private meeting. I wasn't happy with that situation so it is now going to be half-public, half-private.

"Governor Honohan may be able to shed more light in camera… than he may be able to say publicly."
