Hundreds confronted with slash hook fight at confirmation

Hundreds of people, including children, attending a confirmation ceremony in Co. Mayo were confronted with scenes of violence today when a group of men carrying slash hooks stormed the church.

Around a dozen men chased one of the mass-goers around St Mary's Church in Ballinrobe.

A wooden table was then broken across his back in the porch, but there were no other injuries reported.

Armed Gardaí were quickly on the scene and one man was arrested.

It is understood to be part of an ongoing fued involving two local famillies.
