Household Charge 'law of the land', warns Hogan

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has today warned that the law of the land will be applied against anyone planning not to pay the Household Charge.

Minister Hogan said that he is engaging with the Data Protection Commissioner and local authorities to make sure the €100 charge is collected.

The deadline for registration for people who want to pay by direct debit is tomorrow. The final deadline for full payment is March 31.

Minister Hogan has also hit out at campaigns that are encouraging people not to pay.

"The Household Charge is the law of the land, and people should understand that the law will be applied, and if people don't pay, there'll be penalties and fees that will accumulate," he said.

"And people that are advocating that if you don’t register and don't pay that you'll actually not have to pay, are misleading people to the extent that they're putting them in a position of being in breach of the law."
