Armed man dies after being stopped by gardaí
The Garda Ombudsman is investigating after a man died in a shooting incident in Co Tipperary last night.
It happened after Gardaí stopped a car which was seen being driven erratically outside the village of Newport on the Thurles Road at about 7.30pm.
After a short conversation with a Garda, the driver, a man in his mid 40s, produced a gun and fired a number of shots.
The two officers present were not wounded, however the man is said to have then turned the gun on himself, and died at the scene.
