Gardaí arrest man in connection with pensioner's death

A man has been arrested in relation to the murder of a pensioner found stabbed to death in a retirement home.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out today on the body of the victim, named locally as Edward Boylan.

The man, who is in his 70s, was discovered in bed by firefighters called to tackle a blaze in his flat yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí said he was stabbed in the chest at a Dublin City Council-run complex in Ravensdale Close, Kimmage.

It is suspected the fire was started to destroy any evidence inside the house, where the murder weapon is believed to have been found.

A Garda spokesman said a 29-year-old man was arrested in the Dublin city centre in the early hours of this morning in relation to the investigation.

“He is detained at Crumlin Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act,” he added.

Forensic officers and Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar examined the scene of the killing before Mr Boylan’s remains were removed to the city morgue. Investigators have appealed for any witnesses or anyone in the area before 2pm to contact gardai in Crumlin.

Shocked neighbours and residents described the killing as tragic.
