A man who was seriously assaulted in Westmeath two days before Christmas has died in hospital from his injuries.

A man who was seriously assaulted in Westmeath two days before Christmas has died in hospital from his injuries.

He has been named as 20-year old Andrew Dolan from Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim.

The fatal assault happened shortly before 3am on December 23 on Pearse Street in Mullingar.

Mr Dolan was moved to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he passed away last night as a result of his injuries.

Two men in their 20s and a teenage girl were arrested in connection with the incident. They have since been released without charge and files are being prepared for the DPP.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses who may have been in the area on December 23 between 2am and 3am to come forward.

They are also asking anyone with any information about the assault to contact them.
