Jury considering verdict in Wexford neglect case

The jury has retired to consider a verdict in the case of a Wexford couple on trial for the unlawful killing due to neglect of a woman almost six years ago.

The charges were brought against Eleanor Joel and her partner John Costen in relation to the death of Ms Joel's mother Evelyn, who died at Wexford General hospital a week after being brought there from the couple's Enniscorthy home in January 2006.

A post mortem found the 59-year-old died from pneumonia due to blood poisoning from infected bed sores, caused by her immobilisation by multiple sclerosis.

The couple deny the charge.
