Galwegians to welcome their President home

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Galway city this afternoon as Ireland's new President Michael D Higgins returns home.

An open air event is taking place on Eyre Square, with the guest of honour, President Higgins and his wife Sabina expected to arrive at 4.30pm.

The pair spent last night in Dublin after celebratory scenes in Dublin Castle following his election.

At a press conference last night President Higgins said he and Sabina have been very public people all their lives, and were well used to being in the limelight.

In an impassioned and powerful speech following his election, he set the tone for his presidency with a pledge to lead a sea change in the values of society.

“The reconnection of society, economy and ethics is a project we cannot postpone," he said.

“I have encountered in this long campaign an enthusiasm for an Irishness that will be built on recognising again those sources from which spring the best of our reason and curiosity.

“But even more important the powerful instinct for decency which must be at the heart of a real Republic.

“The celebration of the power of the collective in pursuit of the best of ourselves and built too on the power of culture, science and technology delivered through the contemporary genius of our people.

“Ireland has made its choice for the future and it has chosen the version of Irishness it will build.

“I know, and I will work with head and heart to be part of it with all of you in creating that future one in which all of us can be part of and part of us too.”

Mr Higgins' success, secured after transfers from four counts, is the largest total in a presidential election.

Meanwhile, preparations for the formal inauguration are already underway.

Reports from some media in the States suggest that the Hollywood actor Martin Sheen may attend the event.

He's said to be a huge fan of the Galway politician and has worked with him on human rights issues.

It is also understood that a new chair - of Irish white oak - will be made specially for the ceremony which will take place in Dublin Castle on Friday, November 11.

Until then Mary McAleese will continue her full schedule of official engagements .

She has already indicated that she intends to go back studying law once she hands over Mr Higgins in 10 days' time.
