Martin offers congratulations to Higgins
Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin is offering congratulations to Michael D Higgins this afternoon.
Mr Martin said it is an exceptionally proud day for the Labour candidate as well as his wife and their family.
"I have known Michael D Higgins for many years and he will make an excellent President and ambassador for Ireland," Mr Martin said in a statement.
"I want to wish him well in his Presidency for which he will have my full support and that of the Fianna Fáil community across the country.
"As Minister for Foreign Affairs I worked closely with Michael D. Higgins who was Labour’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson.
"His command of global issues and commitment to human rights was significant and I have no doubt that human rights and humanitarian issues will be a significant part of his presidency."
The Green Party is also congratulating Mr Higgins on his imminent presidential election win.
Party leader Eamon Ryan said he is sure Michael D. will do us proud both at home and abroad.
Mr Ryan has also commended the other six candidates for having survived a very difficult campaign with dignity.
