Higgins and Gallagher lead early tallies in presidential election
Some early tallies from count centres around the country in the presidential election suggest it is a two-horse race between Seán Gallagher and Michael D Higgins.
But in Longford Westmeath for example Seán Gallagher and Michael D Higgins are neck and neck.
Similar figures coming in from areas like Wicklow.
It could be a close race at this rate.
First results are not expected until later this evening - and it could be tomorrow before the ninth President of Ireland is elected.
How the nation has voted in two referendums, on cutting judges pay and giving more investigative powers to the Oireachtas, also won't be known until tomorrow.
While counting is taking place in 43 constituencies around the country, all results will be announced centrally from Dublin Castle.
The finishing touches being put to the national count centre here in Dublin Castle.
As each first count is completed in the 43 constituencies it will be fed through here and a full first count result announced probably sometime this evening.
The two referendum ballots will be taken out and set aside for counting tomorrow.
The other count this morning is in Dublin West by-election being counted to fill the seat as a result of the death of Brian Lenihan
