Dublin recovering from 'hundred year' flooding

The head of Dublin City Council has said that the equivalent of a 'one in one hundred year' storm hit the area last night.

Executive Manager Tom Leahy said local response teams from the council are visiting each one of the affected areas to see what assistance they can provide to those who have affected by the floods

An estimated 90 millimetres of rain fell in Dublin alone yesterday evening leading to traffic chaos as well as dangerous levels of floodwater surging along streets and through properties.

Mr Leahy said the problems were simply caused by the massive volume of water that fell.

"It was just the volume of water in the system," Mr Leahy said.

"It is an exceptional event - it was solely due to the rainfall.

"It is far too early to put a cost on it but what we can tell you is that the number of homes and properties affected certainly runs into the hundreds."
