Court overturns Dublin man's conviction for friend's murder

A Dublin man has had his conviction for the murder of one of his best friends four years ago overturned.

Martin Toland of Walkinstown Park will now be re-tried for the fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Alan Nolan at his apartment in Cedarbrook Walk, Ballyfermot on September 8, 2007.

Toland was also sentenced to seven years for causing serious harm to another man James Carroll, on the same date.

He claimed at the trial last year that he had acted in self defence after a row broke out.

His convictions have been quashed because the court was not satisfied that the jury had a sufficiently clear grasp of the legal issues.

Martin Toland is now on bail ahead of his retrial.
